2016 World Pumpkin Record

As of 2016, Mathias Willemijns grew the  2624.6 Willemijns 2016 and is now the world record pumpkin.  This pumpkin weighed 2,624.6 pounds.  I remember recently, pumpkin growers were wondering if 2,500 pounds was possible and it clearly is.

Wyoming State Giant Pumpkin Record

The New Wyoming Giant Pumpkin Record is 1322 Pounds! Ron Hoffman does it once again, setting the Wyoming State Record for the largest pumpkin grown.  Ron is an incredible grower and has been growing giant pumpkins longer than anyone in Wyoming.  He works hard at the hobby, but his character speaks to more than just growing pumpkins.  Ron is always […]

Covered Up

It’s getting late and you can see how I tarp some of my pumpkins.  When I am home, I usually put two blankets on them and then tarp them to keep the moisture off.  Jack Frost was early this year and I have a photo on Facebook of the entire patch that shows the damage.

Going For Orange

I am really only growing two pumpkins for size.  You can see the one on the right has a beautiful yellow color so I’m hoping for a dark red-orange final color. Neither pumpkin is going to break any records this year! In fact, I’m several hundred pounds behind where I should be.  I have been out of town this summer […]

Heavy Snow

The snow caught me by surprise and I did not have all the posts up to support the hail netting. I have upgraded to 1 inch electrical conduit and it still bent down from the weight of the snow. This afternoon, I was able to repair the holes in my netting and I have established some additional supports. We had […]

Pumpkin April Fools

It’s April 1st and there is still a lot of snow on the ground. I was hoping to start preparing the patch this weekend, but it will have to wait a few weeks now to let everything dry out. I sure do love the snow, but I’m ready and looking forward to another year of growing pumpkins. This year, […]

Pumpkin Weigh Off Competition

I had a successful end to my growing season.  I have many people to thank for my success through the years that helped me get to this weight, but I’ll only mention a few here.  First, I consider Ron Hoffman my mentor and friend.  He has provided me with a ton of suggestions and guidance and growing a pumpkin of […]

Hail in September?

I had just posted a picture of a beautiful pumpkin on www.facebook.com/PumpkinFanatics , and we had a hail storm roll through the evening of the 17th.  Unfortunately, our hail storms usually quite by the end of August and we had just removed our hail netting two weeks prior.  I took this photo the next day, but the plants are looking […]

2015 Pumpkin Update

This one is still growing 7 pounds a day.  I’m hoping to go over a 1000 pounds with this one. The most recent photo of the 1223 Radach can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/PumpkinFanatics.  I was so worried that I might have lost it to a blossom split.  We have been monitoring it for the past 7 days and […]

1223 Radach

What an interesting season.  I had planned to grow the 814.5 Radach and grow orange, but unsuccessfully germinated the seed.  I was out of town during this time so it was most likely my own fault.   He was kind enough and sent me his 1223 seed also and that seed’s genetic is the 2009 Wallace X Self.  You can […]

1103 Young

The 1103 initially concerned me due to its torpedo shape.  However, it did grow out of it and I think it will be a brilliant orange.  This is my wife’s favorite pumpkin, but it might end up too big to take to her classroom.  Due to my busy schedule I was unable to get this one planted and in the […]

2036 Glasier-Around Day 20

As you can see, the 2036 is a very white pumpkin.  It has been the fastest growing plant that I have ever experienced.  It was the first to germinate and grew the fastest after that.  This photo was taken around day 20.  I did have one double vine(ribbon) grow off of one of my side vines, but at around 10 […]

I request very few seed from fellow growers and this year’s pumpkins that I tried to germinate are: Stay tuned for the final results on what worked.

Seasons End

The kids carved my pumpkins again this year. The one collapsed as we were driving to our congregation’s trunk-or-treat.

The Year Of Experimentation

Since this year started off a little slow, I decided to make it a year of experimentation.  My 1065 Corbin pumpkin from last year had very few viable seeds.  I averaged a 50% germination rate at best with them.  I was able to get five pumpkins up, but four of them did not withstand the frost we had on June […]

Is Frost or Hail Worse?

On June 15th, my entire garden encountered a light frost.  The frost hit most of us folks that live out in the  country a little ways and Northeast of Cheyenne. Enough said about this post, I’ll take hail over frost since my netting can stop most of the hail.

Snow and Cold

I have not officially talked about the start of my 2014 pumpkin growing season yet since it is having it’s challenges.  I was planning on growing several seeds from Joe Scherber and a 1495 Stelts seed this year, but unfortunately they had problems or did not germinate.  I practiced with my own seeds in advance to try and perfect my […]

Nick’s Garden Center & Farm Market, Aurora, CO

We participated at the Nick’s weigh off this weekend.  We pulled the pumpkin this Tuesday and tried to keep it as cool as possible.  I really didn’t know how much weight I would lose, but it was our only opportunity to lift the giant pumpkin from the patch.  When we left on Saturday, we had to get the trailer through […]

Pumpkin Genetics

There was a post on bigpumpkins.com asking about how the 1770.5 Lieber seed did.  As with a lot of seeds, growers have varying luck.  There were personal bests set with this seed and others had problems.  I must of have been one of the lucky ones. The Lieber plant has been the best plant that I have ever grown.  The […]

Lake Corbin

I don’t remember receiving this much rain this time of year.  The hail was enough to fill my hail netting and shred the new growth on my 980 that is after the pumpkin.  Being just East of Cheyenne, it is my understanding that we received more rain.  I know Saturday evening there were multiple county roads closed due to flooding.  […]

The Mice and Voles Love Pumpkins

Hello fellow growers, I hope you are protecting your pumpkins if you are receiving the rain and  cold weather like I am.  I receive some type of damage every year from rodents and have not found a full proof way.  Last year, we adopted a cat and he caused damage to my pumpkins last year and this year.  I’m not […]

Rainy Day

The pumpkin patch is totally drenched.  My growth has been minimal at best after having some wonderful Wyoming weather.  We had temperatures in the 90s this past week which is rare.  This week, we will have lows at our house in the 30’s. Before the rain, I decided to apply an inch of water.  I had no idea that we […]

A New Colorado Record?

It’s always fun visiting other grower’s patches, especially those who are more experienced and are willing to share advice.  I have had the opportunity and pleasure to meet Ron Hoffman and visit his patch a couple of times, but this adventure took place in Fort Collins.  I know Pete Mohr is known for growing them big and he set the […]

Growing Pumpkins In Hail–Number 10

I made it home from work today to confirm our 10th hail storm this year.  Unfortunately, all the new growth on my 980 was hit, but for the most part,  two of my other plants survived.  I have pockets of hail like this all over my garden.

Do What You Can When Growing Giant Pumpkins

I am a firm believer that everyone has different challenges to overcome while growing pumpkins.  No matter what part of the world,  country, state, county, or city you live in.  Your challenge will be a little different than the next person.   In Wyoming, there are dramatic difference as it relates to the climate within 15 miles and within any direction.  […]

8th Hail Storm, destroyed several pumpkins

Well, we decided to go camping for a night and we had a significant hail storm happen on Friday.  I have lost almost all of the jack-o-lantern pumpkins we were growing.  All of the big pumpkin plants sustained damage and the temperature will not warm up.  We returned on Saturday at 10:30 am and it was still 56 degrees outside.  […]

2013 Growing Pumpkin Growing Season Update

Giant Pumpkin Seeds for 2013 I am definitely behind on keeping this web site current and keeping everyone informed on how my season is progressing.  Due to other factors, I have not had too much time to spend growing pumpkins.  I had selected the seeds that I planned to grow for 2013 fairly early in the season.  I am always […]

The Start of 2013

Just to do a quick recap of 2012: It was a successful growing year. I ended my season blowing up two pumpkins(too much vine pruning at once) and having one not take and rotted half-way through. The remaining two pumpkins did very well and I set a personal best at 818 pounds. I continue to meet new people who also […]

2012 World Record Pumpkin-One Ton

Ron Wallace grew the first pumpkin over 2000 pounds or breaking the one ton barrier by nine pounds.  This is an amazing accomplishment and he definitely knows what he’s doing when it comes to growing them big.  I’m sure this hobby will continue to see pumpkins getting bigger and heavier, but it does make me wonder when they will stop […]

Jared’s Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off

It’s been a busy and fun week!  On Tuesday,  Wednesday, and Thursday the weather outside was rainy and dreary.  I was a little concerned that the voles would return, but I figured I had caught them all and that I was safe.  The previous damage to the pumpkin had dried out with the sulfur dust and I was feeling confident […]

Pumpkin Weigh Off is Close

I sure am hoping to get my pumpkin to Jared’s weigh off this year.  My patch has been cursed this year, but I hope to persevere and get at least one pumpkin to a weigh off.  I wanted to provide a status of my nicest pumpkin as it has been awhile since I have posted anything. The voles really have […]

1306 Mohr is “No More”

If you look at the photo closely, the 1306 Mohr went down today.  I noticed yesterday it seemed a little soft, but was not sure why.  After further investigation, I was able to put a needle easily all the way through the crack.  It’s too bad, this one was a steady grower.  Initially, it was my fastest grower for about […]

1244 Day 53

This pumpkin is still growing 10+ pounds a day and according to the OTT, it is definitely my personal best. I hope she holds together for the weigh off at Jared’s on the 29th. Yesterday, I sprayed more calcium on the leaves and today I gave them a shot of magnesium. Of course, each day they get a good dosing […]

The pumpkin is still growing!

The 1244 REA started growing again! At an OTT of 291.5, it is getting close to being my personal best. It is still growing  close to 20 pounds a day at day 45. It is going to be a brilliant orange and now I just have to focus on keeping it warm. The temperature swings are interesting to say the […]

1244 REA and Cats

It’s been an interesting critter year.  I have no idea how many rabbits, prairie dogs, and ground squirrels I have transported this year.  My kids talked me into getting two cats and told me how they will keep the wildlife population down.  I fell for it hook, line, and sinker.  We adopted two kittens that folks needed to get rid […]

http://reporting.giantstogrow.com/

Hi Everyone, Before I left, I applied a folilar calcium spray to my pumpkin leaves, buried vines, and applied more compost.  I am looking forward seeing my family again, but also interested how the patch will look.  I imagine I will have a lot of tertiary vines to trim and secondary’s to cut and bury.  I had narrowed down my […]

1244 Rea Day 20

The last few days I have been putting the hours in the evening to prepare for when I’m going to be away.  I will be out of town all next week. This year, I am trying plywood with sand on top to see if that prevents the pumpkin from growing over the top of the blossom.  I reburied vines with […]

July 14th Photo of 1244 Rea

I was planning to keep the pumpkin that was further out on this plant, but it appears that the health of the plant has chosen for me. The plant might be infected with bacterial wilt. The new growth starts and looks good, then the leaves die right away. Other leaves have started dying on the plant and the disease is […]

July 7th 2012 Pumpkin Update

This is the 922 Mohr plant. As you can see on all my plants, the wind shredded the back leaves and I have applied too much nitrogen and burned them. I’m always learning and adjusting as I learn. There are many good growers out there that have perfected their techniques. I also think it depends on what area you live […]

1244.5 REA 2011

I pollinated the 1244.5 REA on June 30th.  The plant looks healthy, but the flower look a little different as far as lobes that I’m used to seeing.  I used pollen from my 1306 Mohr 2010.  It has been hot for Cheyenne and some of the leaves have suffered wind burn.

Adding Sand to the Garden

It has been a long spring and summer already.  I am really behind on keeping my diary going this year so I’m starting now.  In the spring, I added 16 tons of sand to the garden.  I way over estimated and my soil is probably considered sandy now.  It does make it easy to pull weeds and the soil does […]

Track Your Vegetable Measurements

This winter I spent time building a new mobile friendly web application.  You can now take your phone to your vegetable patch and enter your measurements using your iPhone,  Droid, or Blackberry.  Once you enter your measurement for your giant pumpkin, you will instantly know the estimated weight.  The best part is you can go into your house and then […]

GreenHouse

I felt I needed to practice germinating pumpkin seeds when the weather is poor outside. I have had problems in the past and often used all my pumpkin seeds to only have a few germinate. I started two weeks ago with a heat mat under the seed tray and lamp. With one lamp, the temperature inside the greenhouse was around […]

Fall Prep 2012

I have learned that to grow a big pumpkin, you should prepare your pumpkin patch in the fall. This year I made a mental note of what I planned to try next or lessons learned. I have included my list here: Water daily 20 minutes with the sprinkler 30 minutes when it’s hot. 2. Lots of Nitrogen early and stay […]

Exploding Giant Pumpkin

They exploded two giant pumpkins and one green squash at Jared’s nursery this year.  Gary’s pumpkin had been eaten by some critters so he decided to drop it from 150 ft.  It was real entertaining watching a pumpkin that was almost 1000 pounds explode! I just finished with the Jared’s weigh off and ended up with my personal best of […]
